Public to pick Desert Island Discs

Radio 4 is turning the turntables on the public to search for the nation's favourite Desert Island Discs.

After almost 70 years of asking prominent figures to nominate their favourite musical choices, the UK public will have a chance to be castaways.

Regular host Kirsty Young will present a 90-minute special to be broadcast next month which will feature some of the public's selections. Listeners will be asked to name their eight favourite discs, as well as pinpointing the one track which they would save if the tropical waves threatened to engulf their choices.

Kirsty said: "Every castaway is unique, but the one thing they all say to me is how difficult it is to choose their eight discs.

"Now the nation has a chance to share in the agony and ecstasy of making their very own selection."

The public can submit their choices on the Desert Island Discs page of the BBC Radio 4 website.

They do not necessarily need to feature music. Some programme guests, such as Dame Judi Dench, Noel Coward and Princess Grace of Monaco, have taken spoken word recordings. Ann Widdecombe chose the sound of a hippo and Matthew Pinsent opted to take cricket commentary if he was marooned on the mythical island.

The Desert Island Discs website details the selections of more than 2,850 castaways, to give listeners inspiration with their own choices.

People can nominate their choices until 2pm on Friday June 3. Kirsty will present the resulting special edition, Your Desert Island Discs, on June 11 at 9am.

The most popular single piece of music selected over the years by programme guests has been Beethoven's Symphony Number 9 in D Minor, chosen by 97 castaways including Martin Sheen and Paulo Coelho.
