Glastonbury off to a muddy start

Glastonbury began with a squelch as the first arrivals at Britain's biggest music festival were forced to contend with a giant mudbath.

The wet weather returned to Worthy Farm with a vengeance as monsoon-like conditions blighted early arrivals' efforts to get prize camping spots.

Hundreds of tents were flooded within a few hours as torrential downpours began shortly after the gates were opened.

The clouds cleared by Wednesday afternoon but it was too late to stop more than 60,000 revellers churning up the 900-acre site.

It is still two days before the first of the main acts take to the Pyramid Stage - but early arrivals said they were "making their own fun".

Marc Saunders, 31, from Bath, pitched his tent in driving rain with his five-year-old daughter Sam and wife Sarah.

He said: "We say it's 'go hard or go home'. We're thrilled to be here, the place is magical - even in the mud."
