Wombles limber up for comeback

Furry troupe The Wombles have been out and about preparing for their stage comeback.

The group - who scaled the charts in the mid-70s - are reuniting to play shows including Glastonbury Festival later this month.

They took leave of their usual Wimbledon Common home to head into London, visiting their local railway station.

The litter-picking creatures also checked out new instruments for their shows by visiting renowned West End music shop Chappell Of Bond Street.

The characters are well known for their green credentials as early supporters of recycling, so they have also been checking out sustainable transport by having a turn on the "Boris bike" cycle-hire scheme.

And they also hopped aboard a tour bus to prepare for their trip to Glasto next week.

The group - Orinoco, Bungo, Great Uncle Bulgaria, Wellington and Madame Cholet - are due to press ahead with a show on the festival's Avalon stage on June 26, despite their bust up with organiser Michael Eavis last week.

Michael said he was "cross" about the booking of the Wombles which he claimed was "a bit of a mistake".

The group, who had four top ten hits with songs such as Remember You're A Womble, subsequently withdrew their offer to tidy up the site afterwards.
