Meadows on hold for Roses film

Bafta-winning director Shane Meadows has revealed a planned film about the Stone Roses reunion is to make up for missing their most legendary gig - because of a "bad acid trip".

The 38-year-old is so desperate to document his heroes' comeback he has put two other projects on hold.

Shane spoke about the project for the first time at a preview screening of his forthcoming Channel 4 drama This Is England '88.

He revealed he was "in talks" with the seminal Manchester band, who last month announced a reunion tour after splitting up in 1996, and that he had sat in on some of their rehearsals.

Shane said the project would help overcome his teenage disappointment for missing the Roses' 1989 concert for 27,000 fans at Spike Island, a performance widely considered to be a milestone in the band's career, despite being beset with sound problems.

Speaking at Bafta in London last night, he said: "I missed the famous Spike Island gig because I had a bad acid trip. You had to be there.

"I wouldn't have cared if they'd come and smacked me with a sandwich, I just wanted to be there and I missed it, so this is be going back to Spike Island but at about 40 and with no hair."

Shane added that he's put on hold his other projects, a biopic about legendary British cycle champ Tommy Simpson, who died while competing in the 1967 Tour de France, and a further instalment to This Is England, a semi-autobiographical account of a gang of friends in Sheffield.

"It's one of those things which come up rarely in life, when you go, 'Apart from my family needing me, that's going to happen. If they want me to do it and it comes off I'm doing that'," he said.
