1D dedicate Brit to their fans

One Direction have dedicated their unexpected Brits win to their fans, and joked that they would have to break the award up between the five of them.

The boy band - Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan - picked up the best British single gong for What Makes You Beautiful

The group dedicated the award to their fans, with Harry adding: "Everything we do is for you, and this is yours."

Backstage, Niall said: "We'll have to break the award into five. Or we need to photocopy it."

Fellow winner Ed Sheeran was surprised to pick up the prize for best British male.

The red-haired singer - who played his hit Lego House at the ceremony - said: "I honestly didn't think I'd get this one, so I'd just like to say thanks to my family, my friends, my fans, every single promoter that's ever booked me, every single radio DJ that's every played me and my label. I'm really bad at this."

After being handed a second award for best British breakthrough act, he said: "I'm ecstatic. This is the best night of my life. Its been wonderful, I didn't expect it. I don't have a house but I do share a flat with my brother. These will go on the mantelpiece."

Coldplay took the best group title for the third time, following wins in 2001 and 2003. It was their seventh Brit in total. Speaking backstage, frontman Chris Martin said: "We were here 11 years ago and we weren't good at accepting it back then either.

"We will take it if no one else does. Radiohead aren't interested and Take That are on holiday.

"We want to launch our own perfume, open a few restaurants and a theme park."
