Usher to perform at BET Awards

Usher is set to perform at the BET Awards.

The R&B star, who is up for video of the year, will take to the stage with previously announced performers Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown.

Samuel L Jackson is hosting the ceremony, while comedians Kevin Hart and Cedric the Entertainer will present awards. Kanye West leads with seven nominations while Beyonce follows with six, and her husband Jay-Z with five.

Lil Wayne, Drake and J Cole also have multiple nominations.

The announcement comes a day after Usher performed at the Hammersmith Apollo as part of American Express Unstaged, which was streamed live at www.youtube.com/UsherVEVO.

The 33-year-old singer took fans on a journey back through the years to celebrate his 18-year career, as he performed his earlier hits such as Yeah!, U Remind Me, You Make Me Wanna and Nice And Slow. He later introduced tracks from his new album Looking 4 Myself, including new single Scream, Climax And Numb (his collaboration with Swedish House Mafia).

The 90-minute gig, directed by Hamish Hamilton, was watched by fans across the globe in partnership with VEVO and YouTube.

"Social media allows me to have interaction with my fans, and be a part of this incredible moment in history," Usher said.

"Tonight's gig was an opportunity for me to be a little bit modern, in terms of technology, and get up close and personal with the fans. This gives me the intimacy I normally cannot get from arenas or stadiums."

Coldplay, John Legend and Duran Duran have also performed as part of American Express Unstaged.
