Sir Elton set for Blackpool gig

Sir Elton John is to perform the inaugural concert at a new venue in Blackpool.

The Blackpool Tower Headland outdoor arena lies in the shadow of the Lancashire resort's tower.

It will host a series of events this summer including the visit of the Olympic flame and gigs by The Wanted, McFly and John Barrowman.

The arena will also stage a celebrity switch-on concert for this year's Blackpool Illuminations at the end of August.

Speaking about his trip to Blackpool, Sir Elton said: "I'm really looking forward to visiting Lancashire again and enjoying the Blackpool sea air. It's been 20 years since I played in Blackpool.

"I hear some very special Blackpool rock has been created just for me!

"The concerts so far on this British tour have been fabulous fun, whatever the weather."

Natalie Wyatt, managing director of Marketing Blackpool, said: "There's a real buzz about as we get into the final stages of preparing for this massive gig.

"It was great to see Elton performing at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Concert but that was just a taste of what's going to happen in Blackpool.

"This is a very exciting event for everyone who lives in Blackpool and who is visiting because of Elton. We are expecting a fantastic evening and know people are going to be talking about this for a long time to come."
