Michael returns on Olympic stage

Pop supremo George Michael has performed for the first time since his life-threatening battle with pneumonia.

Michael, whose life was in the balance after he became ill late last year, could not contain his excitement and failed to keep his role a secret.

Five days ago he revealed he was taking part in proceedings after he tweeted to his half a million followers: "Spending most of next week rehearsing like crazy for the Olympic closing ceremony."

The 48-year-old later admitted that he was "a bit nervous" about the performance, having not appeared in front of a crowd for more than a year.

But tonight the former Wham! singer overcame his fears and performed pop hit Freedom 90 to the packed 80,000-capacity Olympic Stadium.

He sung to the excited athletes as the word "Freedom" was displayed across the stadium.

Clad in black leather, Michael also sung his latest upbeat song White Light.

Michael had to axe a number of shows as medics brought him back from the brink.
