Daft Punk hit breaks million mark

Get Lucky by Daft Punk, the biggest-selling single of the year, has now joined a select group of songs to sell more than a million copies in the UK.

The track has also become the first song featuring guitarist Nile Rodgers to break through the seven-figure barrier, according to figures from the Official Chart Company.

French duo Daft Punk are only the second French act to ever achieve a million-selling single in the UK, and the achievement comes only a few weeks after David Guetta was first, with the song Titanium. Get Lucky managed the feat in only 69 days, while Titanium took 79 weeks.

"The fact that Get Lucky has sold a million copies in the UK is one thing, but to do it in 69 days?! I'm awestruck," Rodgers told OfficialCharts.com. To have this ubiquitous record, that is a hit everywhere, It's amazing to me."

Only 136 singles have managed to sell in excess of a million in the 60 years since the UK charts were established. The number of tracks to do so has increased in recent years due to the rise of downloads which means tracks are almost always available. In the past it was only possible to buy singles if the demand was there to press huge numbers of discs.

Martin Talbot, the chief executive of the Official Charts Company, said: "The last time a single took less than three months to hit a million was James Arthur's Impossible who had the profile and impact of the X Factor behind him."

Older tracks which have tipped over the million mark this year have included Don't Go Breaking My Heart by Elton John and Kiki Dee (first released in 1976), Mysterious Girl by Peter Andre (1995) and Whole Again by Atomic Kitten (2001).
