Kanye West 'humbled' by BET Visionary Award

Kanye West felt humbled "maybe for the first time" as he accepted his Visionary Award at the BET Honors.

The 37-year-old hip-hop star delivered a heartfelt speech at the ceremony in Washington DC, which was filmed on January 24, but was shown in full for the first time last night (23.02.15).

Kanye - who watched a video tribute to him from the likes of Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar and Common - began by saying: "I understand - maybe for the first time in my life - how it is to feel humbled."

The rapper then addressed his marriage to reality TV star Kim Kardashian West, with whom he has a 20-month-old daughter, North West.

He joked: "I want to say that my wife has dated broke black dudes. So it ain't got nothing to do with the money."

Kanye finished his speech by discussing the broader issue of racism and explaining that while the African-American community may not control lots of oil, it does have a worthy substitute for money.

He reflected: "The micro of (racism) is that we focus on different races, as opposed to the macro of it, which is the human race.

"It's the mentality - the slave mentality - we all eventually become slaves to that car, slaves to the perception, slaves to the idea of being cool.

"Our oil is our expression, is our influence. Don't ever let them take that away."
