Rebecca Black reflects on being praised as a 'genius' by Lady Gaga

Rebecca Black has reflected on being praised as a "genius" by Lady Gaga.

The singer-songwriter became an internet sensation at the age of 13 when she released the music video for her song Friday in 2011.

The music video became the most disliked song in YouTube history and was dubbed "the worst video ever made". The song was also heavily criticised and mocked by a number of artists and comedians.

However, Rebecca's fortunes began to change when Gaga praised her as a "genius" and described the song as "fantastic".

"It was so special and it's only meant more to me, I think, as I've kind of gone throughout my career and have tried to navigate this entire process," the 27-year-old said of the Poker Face hitmaker's support during an appearance on the latest episode of Mythical Kitchen. "I mean, at the time, it was such a crazy experience to be a 13-year-old."

Rebecca also received support from Katy Perry, who gave her a cameo in the music video for her 2011 hit Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).

The singer went on to explain that it was a shock to realise that her favourite artists suddenly knew who she was.

"I was a huge Lady Gaga fan, I was a huge Katy Perry fan," she gushed. "It was such crazy experience to go from, like, living in my bedroom and all of these people being so far away to, all of a sudden like, them mentioning your name somewhere or just acknowledging that you exist."

"And a lot of those experiences were people who were obviously, like, poking fun and laughing," Rebecca continued. "That can be like, slightly crushing as a kid."

The artist is promoting her new album Salvation, which is out on 27 February.
