NewsAugust, 22 Mariah Carey to receive Video Vanguard Award at 2025 MTV VMAs![]() Mariah Carey will receive the Video Vanguard Award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards. To celebrate the prestigious accolade, the Hero singer is set to perform a series of hits spanning her lengthy career at the show, which will take place on 7 September. This will be the first time in 20 years that Carey will take to the VMAs stage, following a 2005 appearance where she performed We Belong Together and Shake It Off. The singer made her VMAs debut in 1991 with a memorable performance of her hit Emotions. Carey, who has famously said she doesn't believe in keeping track of her age, will be the oldest artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award at the age of 56. Having amassed more number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 than any other solo artist, she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022 and is often dubbed the "songbird supreme". This will be the eighth consecutive year that a female recipient has been chosen for the Video Vanguard Award after Rihanna won it in 2016, followed by Pink the next year, then Jennifer Lopez in 2018 and Missy Elliott in 2019. After the awards ceremony took a break due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, Nicki Minaj claimed the award in 2022, followed by Shakira in 2023, with Katy Perry taking it home last year. This year's VMAs will take place at the UBS Arena in New York, with rapper and actor LL Cool J lined up to host.
