NewsAugust, 23 Machine Gun Kelly 'aware of the chatter' surrounding his return to rap![]() Machine Gun Kelly is determined to make his next rap record his best yet because he's "hyper aware" of the scepticism surrounding his return to the genre. The 35-year-old musician began his career as a rapper before pivoting to pop punk, and after releasing three rock-driven albums, he's planning to return to his rap roots. The star, also known as MGK, told Complex that he's "aware of the chatter" over his genre-hopping, but insisted that the scepticism only fuels him to make his best rap album yet. "I'm aware of how loud that conversation will be when I drop it, which makes me hyper aware of how great it has to be," he stated. "If they choose to be loud about it, know that it makes me better. That makes me hungrier. And a hungry MGK is a dangerous MGK. "All that's going to do is make my bars meaner and make the production colder. I'm refusing anything less than my greatest rap album with this next one." Although it's been eight years since he released his last rap-centric album, Bloom, MGK challenged the notion that he turned his back on the genre completely. "I've been so present during this entire time of these three albums that people can choose to acknowledge it or look away from it," he said. "Undeniably, in the fine print on the internet, my freestyles, my features, my constant glorification of hip-hop have always been there." The rocker, real name Colson Baker, added that he's on a high following the release of his new rock album, Lost Americana, which he believes contains his best songwriting and guitar playing. "I can't be messed with right now. I'm too tapped in and I'm too hungry," he shared. MGK began his rock stint with his 2020 album Tickets to My Downfall and followed it up with 2022's Mainstream Sellout and this year's Lost Americana, which was released earlier this month.
