Jade Thirlwall learning to embrace vocal restraint on solo songs

Jade Thirlwall has been learning to embrace restraint vocally as a solo artist.

The former Little Mix star has revealed that she has been finding her own singing style ever since the British girl group went on an indefinite hiatus in 2022.

In a recent interview with ELLE, Jade explained she learned she didn't have to belt out every song on her debut solo album, That's Showbiz Baby.

"That's the thing I've learned with this record, especially coming out of Little Mix, is it doesn't always have to be an over-sing," she said. "I've enjoyed learning that about my voice."

She referenced the group's 2016 track Power, which has sometimes been criticised online for being over-sung.

"I'll see people on TikTok reference (our song) Power and say, 'These girlies are out here like, AHHH,'" she told the publication. "Just doing the absolute most for three minutes and seeing who could do the biggest belt."

While Jade still appreciates that style, she noted that she has since learned to embrace restraint.

"I love that, but it's been cool knowing, babe, it doesn't always have to be this huge ad-lib run at the end," she added.

The singer also revealed that her track Angel of My Dreams originally featured a more powerful vocal delivery, but she later decided to re-record it in a calmer style.

Jade released That's Showbiz Baby on 12 September. It features 14 songs, including IT Girl, Plastic Box and the lead track, Angel of My Dreams.
