Classical Brits targets wider reach

The Classical Brits are to undergo a revamp to score a broader audience - dropping the word "classical" from the title.

The event, which will this year feature performances by acts such as Katherine Jenkins and Alfie Boe, is to change its name instead to the Classic Brits.

Organisers said the name change "reflects the show's ambition to embrace a more diverse range of music genres including musical theatre".

The two-hour event will be hosted by Myleene Klass for the fourth consecutive year when it takes place on May 12 at the Royal Albert Hall.

Organisers said the awards event - to be staged a 12th time - "has played a major role in supporting and nurturing talent in both the core classical and crossover world".

The event will embrace musical theatre with the cast of Les Miserables - including Boe - appearing on stage.

Other performers for the show, to be screened by ITV1, include Il Divo and Russell Watson.

Opera star Boe said: "This year's innovations to this already fantastic annual awards show are to be applauded."

Tickets go on sale on Monday.
