Pogues star could win Classic award

Hellraising singer Shane MacGowan is in the running to land a Classic Brit Award.

The former Pogues frontman features on a hit album by The Priests, performing a version of Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth.

The group are up for best album with their third release Noel, alongside Aled Jones and a group of singing nuns.

Jones - shortlisted for his Christmas Gift release - also lines up against a teenager whom he manages, 13-year-old Isabel Suckling, nominated for her album The Choirgirl Isabel.

MacGowan is noted for his colossal drink intake over many years, but made an unlikely pairing with The Priests - all ordained Catholic priests - last year.

Members of the public will choose one of 10 nominees to win the best album title, the most populist of the categories at next month's awards.

The top male artist accolade sees a posthumous nomination for Sir Charles Mackerras, who died last July. The conductor competes against tenor Rolando Villazon and pianist Antonio Pappano, who are both up for two awards. Villazon is also in the running for best album, while Pappano competes for the critics award.

The best female shortlist is an all-British affair for the first time since the awards were launched 12 years ago. Trumpeter Alison Balsom, violinist Nicola Benedetti and Dame Mitsuko Uchida, a Japanese-born naturalised Brit, compete for the title.

The event - formerly known as the Classical Brit Awards - is being hosted by Myleene Klass at the Royal Albert Hall, her first show since the birth of daughter Hero last month.

Performers at the event on May 12 will include Il Divo, who will be presented with a prize as artists of the decade, as well as Balsom, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Alfie Boe and Katherine Jenkins. The event will also be broadcast by ITV1 next month.
