Giants of rock to play charity gig

Celebrities from the world of rock music are planning for a major concert for charity this summer.

Stars including Rick Wakeman and Deep Purple will play Superjam 2011 at the Royal Albert Hall on July 8 to raise funds for the Sunflower Jam.

The charity works with doctors and practitioners to offer holistic integrated medical treatment to the patients most in need.

It was set up in 2006 by Jacky Paice, wife of Deep Purple drummer Ian, who said from Israel where the band are touring: "People have a good time, there's some great music played, and a great atmosphere created.

"Sometimes with charity concerts you get the feeling that people are there out of duty - but it won't be like that at this one. The thing is that this creates money for causes that maybe wouldn't get it normally.

"There are certain things that the NHS can't provide, by virtue of the fact that they don't always have the time or the money, and that's where the charity comes in."

Wakeman, best known for his work with progressive band Yes and his solo career, said: "This is a unique event. It brings together musicians who wouldn't normally be together, and you get people doing things they wouldn't normally do.

"Tickets are selling well but it would be great to have every seat sold."

Master of Ceremonies will be the actor Jeremy Irons, who is donating a long weekend's stay at his castle in Ireland as part of the auction to take place at the event.

He said: "I'm going to try to hold the whole evening together. I survive quite a lot with alternative medicine, so what the money is raised for is close to my heart. I'm something of a rocker manque, so I love being there and enjoy the evening enormously."
