Washbourn vows 'no opera' on tour

Popstar To Operastar's Joseph Washbourn has assured fans he will not break out into operatic spurts during his band Toploader's live shows.

The singer, who survived a sing-off against former Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton last night, is touring with his re-formed band this summer.

But he said he would be keeping his rock career well away from his classical efforts.

"I think we shall keep it strictly Toploader if it's a Toploader show. It would be a surprise for our fans for sure, but I doubt very much that I will burst into arias," he said.

Joseph found himself in the bottom two again of last week's show, following his previous showdown against soul diva Jocelyn Brown.

He said: "I feel like this TV show is like being in a boxing match at the moment."

"It is a TV show, so a lot of it runs on the phone votes and there are some strong fan bases out there."

Joseph has released a new Toploader single A Balance To All Things and album, Only Human, after teaming up with bandmates Dan Hipgrave, Matt Knight and Rob Green once again.

The 35-year-old musician reckons this weekend would be his "make or break" moment as he attempts to get his tongue around a composition in Italian.

"I'm not quite there with the language yet but it is a beautiful and stirring piece of music."
