Killers light up stage despite rain

The Killers' attempts at an explosive finale for their Hard Rock Calling performance were almost ruined by the British weather.

Brandon Flowers and the Las Vegas rockers had promised a surprise when they played London's Hyde Park on Friday night, but as heavy rain fell throughout their set, a spectacular fireworks display timed for the end of their final song, When You Were Young, almost didn't go off.

Flowers told the cheering crowds: "We're not finished with you yet London", as the band returned for their encore.

As the audience clapped and sang along to When You Were Young some smoke rose from above them, and just after the band had finished and crowds were moving away a delayed fireworks display finally exploded from above the stage.

But the weather didn't dampen the spirits of the audience, who stuck out the rain to watch the band play all their hits, including Mr Brightside, Smile Like You Mean It, Bones and Somebody Told Me.

Kaiser Chiefs played the main stage before The Killers, getting the crowd in the mood for a singalong with Ruby, before whipping them up into a frenzy with I Predict A Riot and The Angry Mob.

Police were watching the crowd closely in case any over-enthusiastic fans got out of control.

Bon Jovi will headline Hard Rock Calling on Saturday followed by Rod Stewart on Sunday.

Adam Ant and Stevie Nicks are also on the bill.
