Cole in tribute to unsung heroes

Cheryl Cole and a host of other celebrities have gathered to celebrate some of the nation's unsung heroes.

The singer, the comedian James Corden and the stars of Strictly Come Dancing and The X Factor were among those who arrived on the red carpet for the Pride of Britain Awards in London.

The event at the Grosvenor House hotel in Park Lane, hosted by Carol Vorderman, features stories of heroism and courage, with the awards in their 13th year.

Tom Phillips, 11, from Wales, received a gong after he found himself in a life or death situation when a raging bull attacked his father, Andrew.

The bull tossed Mr Phillips into the air like a rag doll and trampled his body. Tom, who was just 10 at the time, made a split second decision that saved both their lives, jumping behind the wheel of a tractor and nudging the bull away.

Tom, who was presented with the award for the Child or Teenager of Courage by Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, said: "It was really scary and terrifying."

He said he was looking forward to displaying the gong "in my bedroom on a big shelf".

Donnelly said: "I can't imagine what Tom must have gone through and how he did what he did."

He added: "To do that at 10-years-old is quite a feat."
