Delpy to direct new Strummer film

Julie Delpy is set to direct a new film about punk pioneer Joe Strummer.

The Clash frontman, who died in 2002, has already been celebrated on film in Julien Temple's documentary The Future Is Unwritten.

According to Variety, French actress Julie's new movie will focus on the period in 1982 - prior to the release of the band's Combat Rock album - when he went missing.

Strummer's management were apparently keen to cook up a story about his disappearance to create publicity to push ticket sales. But the musician was uncomfortable with the idea and really did scarper, heading to France with his girlfriend, and taking part in the Paris marathon while he was there.

He was absent for the album's release and a number of shows had to be cancelled until he was spotted and persuaded to return.

The film is reported to be called The Right Profile, named after a track from the band's most successful album London Calling, released in 1979.

Last year it was announced that another film was being made about The Clash, examining the making of London Calling.
