Final farewell to singer Whitney

The funeral of singer Whitney Houston is to take place at the church where she performed as a child.

Fifteen hundred guests, including Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder, are expected to attend the private event at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey.

Whitney, 48, was found submerged in the bath in her hotel room on the fourth floor of the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles last Saturday.

Fire services and hotel security rushed to the suite but attempts to resuscitate her failed and she was pronounced dead shortly before 4pm local time.

Her final resting place will be next to her father John at the Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey. He was buried there in 2003.

The death of the star, one of the world's best-selling artists in the 1980s and 1990s, prompted a worldwide outpouring of grief, with tributes paid by some of the biggest names in the music industry.

Whitney won multiple Grammys including album and record of the year, selling millions of albums and singles worldwide.

The I Will Always Love You and Saving All My Love singer also carried her success into the film industry, appearing in hit movies including The Bodyguard.

But her career began to unravel as she battled with drug addiction, spending various spells in rehab. Her voice began to suffer, prompting record sales to nosedive and in 2007 her 15-year marriage to husband Bobby Brown came to an end.

Whitney appeared on the X Factor in Britain in 2009 and released a new album after seven years off the scene.
