Carly Rae Jepsen holds top spot

Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen held on to top spot in the singles charts this week with her hit Call Me Maybe.

The track came in at number one last week and saw off a challenge from fellow Canadian Justin Bieber, whose single Boyfriend entered the chart at number two.

Australian-Belgian singer-songwriter Gotye, who spent five weeks at the top with smash hit Somebody That I Used To Know, featuring Kimbra, remained at number three.

There were three more new entries in the top 10 from the Official Charts Company.

Climax by American star Usher came in at number four, We Are Young by US indie pop ban Fun, featuring Janelle Monae, entered the chart at seven, and Level Up by UK rapper Sway came in at number eight.

Adele returned to the top of the album charts with 21, the biggest selling record of 2011. It rose two places, taking over from Pink Friday - Roman Reloaded by Nicki Minaj.

Boys & Girls by US rock band Alabama Shakes came in at number three, while Who You Are by Jessie J rose from number eight to number four.

The only other climber in the albums top 10 was former number one Born To Die by Lana Del Rey.

The Official Charts Company said Carly Rae Jepsen had a convincing win over Bieber, shifting 110,000 copies this week to outsell him two to one. Adele's achievement in returning to the top of the albums chart means that the Tottenham-born phenomenon overtakes the career records of music legends David Bowie and Dire Straits in the number of weeks spent at number one in the album chart.

The star currently enjoys a tally of 23 weeks - the one week at number one of her debut album, 19, plus 22 weeks for her current album. Bowie and Dire Straits each hold 22 weeks.
