Inspiration award for Black Sabbath

Reunited heavy metal trailblazers Black Sabbath were honoured for their influence on the rock industry at the Kerrang! Awards tonight.

The band - due to headline the Download festival this weekend - was given the inspiration award at the magazine's annual bash.

Other big winners included former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash and actor Jack Black's band Tenacious D.

Black Sabbath announced last year that they were re-forming to record their first album in their original line-up for 33 years, although drummer Bill Ward is no longer taking part. The group, through which Ozzy Osbourne found fame, are best known for tracks such as Paranoid and Iron Man.

The event - officially called the Kerrang! Awards Fuelled By Relentless Energy Drink - presented Slash with the icon award for his years as one of the rock world's best known musicians.

And Tenacious D - who affectionately spoof the hard rock world - were handed another honorary prize for their "services to rock".

Other winners at the event staged at The Brewery in Barbican, London, included You Me At Six who were named best British band and Enter Shikari, who triumphed as best live band.

Mastodon's The Hunter took the best best album title, and My Chemical Romance landed the prize for best international band.

The hall of fame prize - won in past years by acts such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest - went to Californian metallers Machine Head.
