Little Mix fly to top of charts

Little Mix have flown straight to the top of the charts with their new single Wings.

Last year's X Factor winners - Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall - auditioned as solo singers but were put together as a girl group during the series by judge and mentor Tulisa Contostavlos, going on to win the ITV1 show.

It is the second number one for the band, who also shot to the top with debut release Cannonball.

Figures released in the middle of the week by the Official UK Charts Company showed them outselling their closest rival, last week's chart-topper Sam And The Womp's Bom Bom, by more than two copies to one, leaving it trailing in second place.

Nelson said: "This has been the best week ever. We feel like Wings is our baby that we've been waiting to unleash on the world. To have it released and go straight to No 1 is just incredible. Thank you to everyone that has bought the single this week, it means so much to us."

There was also a new number one in the album chart, with Rita Ora hitting the top spot with her full-length debut ORA. Her single How We Do (Party) was also at number three in the singles chart.

She said earlier this week: "I worked so hard on this album, and then you let it go and don't have any control over it. So it's a bit scary, but I'm excited. I just want to say thank you to all my amazing fans, and I hope I make you feel good listening to my music."

Olympics and Paralympics fever is apparent in the rest of the charts, with many releases from bands and artists who have been featuring in both Games.

Harder Than You Think by American rap group Public Enemy was originally released in 2007 but has enjoyed a resurgence as the soundtrack to Channel 4's coverage of the Paralympics and is this week's number four in the singles chart. It is its highest entry after first entering the chart at the beginning of last month.

One Day Like This by Elbow, which got the 80,000 crowd in the Olympic Stadium swaying when it was performed by the band during the closing ceremony last month, was at number 19, four years after it was originally released.
