Celine honours shooting victim

Celine Dion has led stars performing at a Canadian benefit concert in honour of the man shot dead during the Parti Quebecois election-night victory party.

The singer opened the show following a minute's silence in honour of lighting technician Denis Blanchette who died last month. Her performance of L'Amour Existe Encore was greeted with rapturous applause at Montreal's Metropolis concert hall.

Celine told CBC news before the show: "For us to be all together tonight is hopefully going to help to, certainly won't bring it back... But is it ever possible to get together and support and give good strength, positive energy to the family and the poor little child. It's so hard."

Also performing at the event were Arcade Fire, Dumas, Martha Wainwright and Ben Harper.

Organiser Andre Menard welcomed the crowd and read a letter from Leonard Cohen.

Martha Wainwright presented a video of her newly-married brother Rufus singing Cohen's Hallelujah.

She was then joined on stage by her aunt, Anna McGarrigle, to accompany her on piano for a version of the McGarrigle Sisters' Dans Le Silence.

All profits from the concert will go to the Denis Blanchette trust fund, to help his four-year-old daughter Amy.
