Steps complete dancing record bid

Pop group Steps have made what is likely to be their final stride towards setting a new world record in a supermarket dance-off.

The Nineties stars pulled a crowd of around 200 people to help complete their mission to get more than 180,000 people dancing to their 1998 cover number one hit Tragedy.

Leading the dance-off at Sainsbury's in Crayford, south-east London, Steps added to the 179,850 fans that danced to their famous routine to the Bee Gees track on this year's 22-date sell-our arena tour.

Now awaiting verification from Guinness World Records, group member Claire Richards said: "Supermarkets are filled with guilty pleasures to tempt shoppers, and today we were one of them. Fans and foodies danced their hearts out, topping off what has been a phenomenal and now record breaking tour."

Group member Faye Tozer said dancing for fans in a supermarket was not the strangest experience the group have had.

She said: "We did a gig in Germany in front of some washing machines; I think that's the strangest one. The most fun was on tour at the O2."

On setting a new record, she said: "I think it's really exciting for the people who have come along to join in with us and for us it's just a really great benchmark because we've had such a fantastic year, and a massive thank you to everyone."

The group will play a mini-Christmas tour this year and are releasing a live DVD with footage from their most recent dates on the road.
