One Direction scoop MTV Euro award

Chart superstars One Direction are to collect the prize for the best UK and Ireland act at next month's MTV European Music Awards.

The quintet topped a public poll to triumph in the category, ahead of the event being staged in Frankfurt, Germany, on November 11.

The What Makes You Beautiful group's Louis Tomlinson said: "We're so happy and incredibly honoured to have won this. Once again our amazing fans have done us proud."

Viewers will go on to vote for their favourite worldwide act, with One Direction battling it out against winners from four other global regions for the further accolade.

The 19th MTV EMA awards show is being hosted by model Heidi Klum with performers including Taylor Swift, Muse, No Doubt, Carly Rae Jepsen and Rita Ora.

One Direction are at number six in the official UK singles chart after latest single Live While We're Young - the first released from second album Take Me Home - failed to top the charts.

Last week the track became the fastest seller by a UK act in the US.
