Smashed Nirvana bass up for auction

The remnants of a smashed bass guitar from Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit video are to be sold for up to £25,000 next month.

It will be sold by Christie's in London on November 29 at an entertainment memorabilia auction which also includes Indiana Jones's whip and the Holy Grail used in the Last Crusade film. Bob Dylan's high school yearbook with a personal message written by him will also be among the lots.

The band's Krist Novoselic's bass is seen being trashed by his Nirvana bandmate, late frontman Kurt Cobain, in the celebrated promo for the Seattle trio's first hit.

Novoselic bought the Zen-On bass from a pawn shop prior to the 1991 video shoot knowing he would bash it to pieces during filming.

The body of the guitar was salvaged by one of the teenage extras in the film, which saw the the band play in front of an audience in a dark moody studio flanked by black-clad cheerleaders.

Christie's estimates the guitar will sell for £15,000 to £25,000.

Indy's whip, originally donated by film-maker Steven Spielberg for a 2001 charity auction, is expected to fetch up to £15,000, while the Grail is estimated to go for up to £3,500.

The Dylan item dates back to 1958 and features a photograph of the young chubby-cheeked Robert Zimmerman - his real name - pictured as a high-school student at the age of 17, before he left Minnesota for New York. In the yearbook he has written: "Dear Jerry, Well the year's almost all over now huh. Remember the 'sessions' down at Collier. Keep practicing the guitar and maybe someday you'll be great! A friend, Bob Zimmerman."

The book is expected to go for up to £6,000.
