Johnny Marr: I'm happy out front

Johnny Marr reckons being the frontman of a band is easier than staying in the background.

The former Smiths guitarist is releasing a new solo album in February, and is happy to step into the spotlight.

"It is different but I like being out front. It's actually easier in a way being out front because you can control the sort of vibe on stage," he said.

"It's more predictable because I'm the one with the microphone. When you're with some other bloke you never know what's going to happen."

Johnny said his new album sounds "like guitar pop, new wave music".

"It's all finished and I'm very excited about it. I've got a good band playing with me and jolly good songs with good starts and good middles and good ends."

Some of the album was recorded in Berlin.

"I wanted to get out of England but I wanted to keep a European atmosphere," he explained.

"You just need to change things up really to keep it fresh, and Berlin's got a really interesting atmosphere so I did quite a lot of the vocals there and some of the guitars."
