Rapper Drake leads BET nominations

Rapper Drake leads the nominations at the BET Awards this year.

The Canadian received twelve nods from Black Entertainment Television ahead of the ceremony in Los Angeles on June 30.

He is nominated three times for the top prize of video of the year for his hit Started From The Bottom, as well as his collaboration with 2 Chainz on No Lie and with A$AP Rocky on Problems.

His three efforts with do battle with Justin Timberlake's Suit & Tie and Kanye West's Mercy among others.

Hip hop artist Kendrick Lamar and singer Tamar Braxton announced the nominations at a packed press conference in Los Angeles, with Kendrick picking up eight nods.

R&B singer Charlie Wilson, 60, was announced as the winner of the Cadillac Lifetime Achievement Award.

Wilson was joined at the press conference by controversial singer Chris Brown, who will perform at the show alongside R Kelly, and comedian Chris Tucker, who will host.

Chris, who received a nomination for Best Male R&B Artist, said: "I was in the back so I was kinda shocked. You know, I'm no good with public speeches and what not. I just want to thank all the fans.

"I'm so excited to be performing again... I'm just trying to uplift the black community and bring everybody together. So what I wanna do is just have fun," he added.

The BET Awards will air on July 2 at 8pm on BET.
