NewsMay, 23 Lauper: Broadway is a happy placeCyndi Lauper says Broadway is a much more pleasant place to work than the music industry. The Girls Just Wanna Have Fun singer teamed up with playwright Harvey Fierstein and director-choreographer Jerry Mitchell to make Kinky Boots, a musical adaptation of a British film about a drag queen who comes to the rescue of a flagging show factory. Cyndi, who wrote the music for the Tony-award nominated show, revealed: "Look, they don't break your balls that much here, know what I'm saying? They don't friggin' aggravate you as much. "The record companies gave me a lot of grief for a long, long time. These people wanted me to be part of their team. I was so flattered." Kinky Boots has the most Tony Award nominations this year, with 13, just one ahead of Matilda: The Musical, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.
