NewsJuly, 31 Jahmene's debut album tops chartX Factor veterans had mixed fortunes at the top of the charts this week as Jahmene Douglas went straight in at number one with his debut album but One Direction lost out to all-conquering Avicii in the singles. Soulful singer Douglas, who was stacking shelves at a Swindon Asda before finding fame on the ITV show, scored his first ever number one with cover versions album Love Never Fails by knocking Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines off the top. Including a duet of Whitney Houston's The Greatest Love of All with his X Factor mentor Nicole Scherzinger, the 22-year-old is sure to be happy he changed his mind after reportedly dismissing the idea of a covers album. Meanwhile, the 1D boys were unable to emulate their Syco labelmate's triumph with new track Best Song Ever and had to settle for second spot in the singles after a second week of strong sales for superstar Swedish DJ Avicii's Wake Me Up. The 23-year-old had already bagged the fastest-selling single of 2013 so far the week before, and this time around he trounced Harry Styles and co by outselling Best Song Ever by two copies to one. In addition to the 267,000 shifted last week, Wake Me Up managed to tally up a further 155,000 this time around. The top five was completed by a selection of recent number one hits, with Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines dropping one place to number three, John Newman's Love Me Again at number four and Icona Pop's I Love It FT Charli XCX at number five. Pop diva Lana Del Rey was the week's highest climber with Summertime Sadness, which rocketed up 50 places to make its top 40 debut at 32. Toploader's 2000 top 10 hit Dancing In The Moonlight scaled 36 places to re-enter the top 40 at 27, while Calvin Harris' Thinking About You FT Ayah Marar climbed 14 spots to number 14. In the albums list, 21-year-old former Disney star Selena Gomez saw her debut solo album Stars Dance straight in at number 14. Justin Bieber's ex has previously had three top 20 albums in the UK with The Scene. The Rolling Stones are no strangers to the charts either, and saw their new live offering, Hyde Park Live, debut at number 16 just weeks after recording during London concerts on July 6 and 13. As Jahmene Douglas shot to the top, Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines was pushed down to number two, while Jay-Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail was at number three, Passenger's All The Little Lights at number four and Rod Stewart's Time completed the top five.
