Yorke to put gigs on pay-to-view

Radiohead star Thom Yorke is to trial a new digital music service which allows fans to buy tracks and video from live shows just moments after they have happened.

The musician - who pulled songs from streaming service Spotify this week claiming new artists were not being properly paid - will make his London shows with new band Atoms For Peace available on soundhalo.

Fans will have to pay 99p per song or £9.99 for the whole performance when the band plays at London's Roundhouse next week in what will effectively be seen as a pay-to-view gig, which they can then keep.

Bandmate Nigel Godrich - who is also Radiohead's producer - said the innovation will provide a better experience for fans who want to relive a show but often have to rely on wobbly footage on YouTube.

Thom's new band also features Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea and respected drummer Joey Waronker and they are due to play three sell-out shows at the Roundhouse, two of which will be available on smartphones and computers through the service.

Nigel said: "Part of the reason soundhalo was interesting to me was that I found myself wondering why, whenever you go to a gig, the next day there are a million shaky, horrible sounding YouTube videos already online. But you go and look because you want to see something of your experience."

Mercury Prize-winners Alt-J made one of their shows available through soundhalo earlier this year.

TV talent shows such as The X Factor have made live performances available to download through iTunes shortly after their TV performance.
