Human rights group criticises Kanye

The Human Rights Foundation is criticising Kanye West for performing at a wedding in Kazakhstan, saying he legitimised the human rights violations of the nation's president.

The rapper performed at the wedding of Nursultan Nazarbayev's grandson on Saturday.

The US-based human rights group compared his appearance to a similar visit earlier this year by Jennifer Lopez to Turkmenistan, another country with a history of human rights violations.

HRF President Thor Halvorssen said in a statement that the Central Asian country is a "human rights wasteland" where entertainers like the rapper would be imprisoned for expressing their views.

The star's publicist did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

The foundation says Nazarbayev curbs political rights and suppresses the media.
