Glastonbury revellers set for rain

Music fans have been arriving en masse as the gates of Glastonbury were thrown open for the world famous festival.

A constant stream of revellers were entering the site laden down with bags and rucksacks, with many pushing wheelbarrows full of essential items they will need over the next five days - along with plentiful supplies of alcohol.

Wellington boots and raincoats were fashion staples for many with heavy showers forecast for late tomorrow onwards but others were less practically dressed.

Car parks were opened from 9pm yesterday (June 24) to allow festival-goers to arrive throughout the night when traffic volumes were low, but they were not allowed to leave their cars.

The gates were then opened from 8am today for those keenest to get their Glastonbury experience off to an early start and get the top spots for their tents.

A message on the festival's official Twitter account this morning read: "Glastonbury 2014 gates are officially open! We hope that everyone coming this year has a fantastic festival."

Up to 175,000 people are expected to descend on the fields of Worthy Farm, in Pilton, Somerset, ahead of the main acts starting on June 27.

This year's event will see Metallica, Kasabian and Arcade Fire headlining the musical extravaganza with other bands on the bill including the Black Keys, Massive Attack and Pixies.

Forecasters have said that the fine weather that has been enjoyed recently is not set to last, with heavy downpours expected from late tomorrow onwards which are likely to make the 1,200-acre site "quite muddy".

John Griffiths of MeteoGroup said the fact that the ground is currently hard due to the lack of recent rain will not make much difference because of the amount of rain expected to fall.

"If it was just a few showers, the hard ground would make it drain off," he said. "But with three days-worth of rain due, it will get quite muddy, I suspect."
