Independent label signs New Order

Pop pioneers New Order have signed for independent label Mute more than 30 years after making their name with Factory Records.

The Manchester band, who formed in 1980 out of the ashes of post-punk rockers Joy Division, released their first single on Factory in 1981 and went on to have hits with pioneering dance track Blue Monday and Temptation.

Mute, founded in 1978 by Daniel Miller, is best known for launching the career of Depeche Mode.

New Order said: "We couldn't imagine a better place to be than working with Daniel Miller and his team. Mute has a superb roster of artists and a history that complements our own. In many ways joining the label feels like we are coming home, returning to our independent roots."

Miller said the deal was "an exciting new chapter" for the label and the band. He said: "When the possibility of us working together first came up, I was invited to hear some of the new material and immediately had no doubts whatsoever that Mute would be the right home for New Order. We've already had a number of creative conversations, and I am looking towards an exciting future."

The band, currently performing without founder member Peter Hook, recently toured South America and the United States and plan to record new material this year.
