Elbow back Mulvey for Mercury Prize

Mercury Prize winners Elbow have backed singer songwriter Nick Mulvey to take this year's award as they performed at the 2014 iTunes festival.

Elbow, who won the Mercury in 2008 with their album The Seldom Seen Kid and have been nominees on two other occasions, were supported by 2014 nominee Mulvey at Camden Roundhouse.

Lead singer Guy Garvey sang "Nick Mulvey should win the Mercury Prize" to the tune of their hit Grounds for Divorce and urged the crowd to join in.

Elbow played a set dominated by songs from their most recent album The Take Off and Landing of Everything.

But the Bury band, who formed more than 20 years ago, still squeezed in songs from their 2001 debut Asleep In The Back.

And the five-piece, supported by a string quartet and brass band, closed the night with their biggest anthem One Day Like This.

Folk singer Mulvey, whose debut First Mind was nominated for the Mercury on Thursday, opened the night to a responsive crowd.

One of 12 acts nominated for the prestigious prize, Mulvey is up against the likes of Blur frontman Damon Albarn for his first solo effort Everyday Robots and Brighton rockers Royal Blood.

The winner takes home £20,000 and will be announced on October 30.
