Radio awards ceremony to be dropped

The annual Radio Academy Awards ceremony - one of the most prized events for UK broadcasters - is to be scrapped after more than 30 years.

The event was for many years known as the Sony Awards but the chief sponsor pulled out for this year's event and the decision has been taken to pull it for next year.

Organisers say they are looking to develop "a new annual event to celebrate the UK Radio Industry" in the future.

The decision to drop the ceremony followed a strategic review looking at how the Academy's events could reflect the digital age. The BBC and commercial firms say they are united in their ambition to create a new event to "reflect the radio industry in a dynamic and modern way".

Ben Cooper, the controller of Radio 1 who is also chair of the Academy, said: "I'm confident and determined that as an industry we can create an exciting and modern event that retains the gravitas of over 30 years of Awards."

It is thought that an awards aspect will be incorporated into the future event when it is finalised.

The awards were launched in 1983.
