Nick Grimshaw and Radio 1 attract more listeners, Rajar figures reveal

BBC Radio 1 has put on nearly three quarters of a million listeners in the second quarter of the year, according to figures released by audience research body Rajar.

The latest statistics show the station pulled in an average weekly audience of 10.4 million in the period from April 6 to June 28.

This was an increase of 7.6 per cent over the first quarter, though down 3.3 per cent on the same quarter last year.

Radio 2 put on 0.4 per cent over the previous quarter, at 15.1 million, but is also down on the same quarter last year, by 2.3 per cent.

The BBC said Radio 1, which recently launched new programmes for presenters Clara Amfo and Annie Mac, added 737,000 listeners, and has an audience of 11.34 million when listeners aged 10 to 14 are included.

The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw increased its weekly reach by 344,000 to 5.84 million, from 5.5 million last quarter, while the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Radio 2 attracted 9.7 million listeners per week, up from 9.46 million last quarter.

Helen Boaden, director of BBC Radio, said: “It’s great to see young listeners recognising the passion and commitment Radio 1 has for their music and interests. The station plays a unique role in informing, educating and entertaining young listeners and these figures show that it remains at the top of its game. Radio is frequently underestimated so it’s wonderful to see the whole market growing this quarter.”

Ben Cooper, controller at Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra, said: “I’d like to thank Clara and Annie Mac for helping us add three quarters of a million listeners in such a short time, and I’m delighted that we are also averaging over one million requests a month on the Radio 1 iPlayer channel and over one million views a day on YouTube. Radio 1 will continue to bring new music, new presenters and new innovations to our young audience.”
