Captain Tom Moore Now Has A Chart Record To Go With His Number One Single
Captain Tom Moore’s achievements just keep on coming.
The war veteran, who has already raised more than £28 million for the NHS by walking laps of his garden, set a new chart record after his cover of You’ll Never Walk Alone with Michael Ball hit number one on Friday.
The 99-year-old has become the oldest artist to reach number one on the official UK singles chart in its 70-year history.
The track, which was recorded in lockdown and features The NHS Voices Of Care Choir, will also be top of the charts when he hits his milestone 100th birthday next Thursday.
Speaking from his home in Bedfordshire, Captain Tom said: “What wonderful news to receive today, a number one single and record-breaker too – my grandchildren can’t believe I am a chart topper!
“I have to thank Michael Ball, the NHS Voices Of Care Choir and everyone behind the scenes, who shared their talents and expertise in order to raise money for the NHS, to whom we owe so much.
“And, of course, the public for buying the single and donating – we’re in this together, and I am forever grateful for your support.
“And this just proves you’ll never walk alone.”
You’ll Never Walk Alone is also now the fastest selling single of 2020, according to the Official Charts Company.
It reached the top spot after Captain Tom’s closest competitor, The Weeknd, asked his fans to support the track over his own single, Blinding Lights.
Tom and Michael’s duet had combined chart sales of 82,000 units, with The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights trailing in second place with a tally of 69,000.
Michael told OfficialCharts.com: “This is the most extraordinary thing, one of the most proudest moments of my career, but it’s not about me, it’s about Captain Tom.
“Thank you for giving him a number one on his 100th birthday. You are the best, God bless ya.”
