NewsDecember, 2 German punk shock rocker chosen for Angela Merkel's leaving ceremonyAngela Merkel has stunned Germans by choosing a punk song by a provocative shock rocker for her farewell ceremony as chancellor. At a torch-lit military parade on Thursday to mark the end of her 16 years in office, a brass band will play a tune by Nina Hagen, an artist who shot to international fame in the Seventies with her wild hairstyle and snarling vocal delivery. The singer, known as the “godmother of German punk”, notoriously scandalised the Netherlands when she mimed masturbation on Dutch television. Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen or You Forgot the Colour Film is one of three songs selected by the outgoing chancellor. But there may be more to Mrs Merkel’s choice than the desire to shock. She and Hagen both grew up in communist East Germany, and the song she has chosen was a massive hit there in 1974 — long before Hagen escaped to the West and became a punk.
