NewsDecember, 5 Sum 41 cancel Australian tour due to Deryck Whibley illness
Sum 41 have cancelled the Australian dates on their farewell tour because frontman Deryck Whibley is too ill to perform. The Fat Lip rockers announced on social media on Thursday that they are unable to go through with the tour Down Under due to the singer's ongoing battle with pneumonia. "It is with deep sadness and regret that we announce our 2024 Australian tour is unable to proceed," they wrote. "We were beyond excited to deliver this tour from December 4 - December 12, and connect with our Aussie fans once more. "Now that we're here though, and under the guidance and direction of multiple Australian doctors, it's clear that Deryck is too unwell to perform. We understand and appreciate your disappointment - we're gutted too." The cancellation of the entire tour comes shortly after the band called off Wednesday's show at the Fortitude Valley Music Hall in Brisbane. They announced at the time, "Unfortunately, we have to make the difficult decision to cancel tonight's show in Brisbane due to Deryck being diagnosed with pneumonia. He is receiving the best possible local care." The In Too Deep hitmakers were due to perform in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney over the weekend as part of the Good Things Festival. The event will still go ahead, while ticketholders for Sum 41's separate shows in those cities - as well as Adelaide - will receive refunds. The Canadian group kicked off their farewell trek, Tour of the Setting Sum, in February in support of their eighth and final album Heaven :x: Hell. After a run of gigs in their home country next year, they will perform their last-ever show in Toronto on 30 January. They will then officially bow out after being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during the Juno Awards in Vancouver on 30 March.
