Rick Astley reveals unexpected secret of Never Gonna Give You Up music video

Rick Astley has surprised fans by sharing secrets from the set of his iconic Never Gonna Give You Up music video.

The 58-year-old music icon was a chart star in the 1980s and has enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent years since his song became a Rickrolling meme in the mid-noughties.

But now the singer has been sharing unexpected secrets about the music video in a new interview with The Sunday Times's Style magazine.

Revealing that he styled himself in the 1987 video, he said, "Everyone else who was making videos at the time, they'd have a stylist, but I remember bringing a black holdall with clothes in it to the shoot.

"If you look at the video closely and see close-ups of my shoes, they're old brogues that have seen quite a few miles."

He added, "My first song, Never Gonna Give You Up, that video is etched into my DNA now. All I have to do is wear a stripy blue t-shirt under a blazer if we're out touring and the audience goes mad."

He also picked out his personal style icon, saying, "David Bowie - he looked amazing in everything, even trying to be an alien.

"The pinnacle for me was the Live Aid gig in 1985. He came on wearing a pale suit with really baggy trousers and a shortish jacket, and his hair was coiffed but as if he had just turned up, said, 'I don't need a mirror, darling,' and headed straight to the stage. He owned it."
