NewsDecember, 24 Elton John celebrates ongoing success of festive song Step into Christmas
Elton John has expressed his delight over the ongoing success of his song Step into Christmas. Originally released in November 1973, the singer-songwriter co-wrote the festive track with lyricist Bernie Taupin. Earlier this month, officials at the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced that Step into Christmas had been certified platinum for sales of one million units. Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Elton posted a photo showing himself posing with two platinum record plaques. "A special Christmas present to me!" he exclaimed in the caption. "Step Into Christmas has gone platinum in the US and 4× platinum in the UK. To think a song released over 50 years ago is still part of so many people's festivities (and even sat in the UK Top 10 again this year!) is very special." To conclude the message, Elton thanked fans for listening to the track each December. "Thank you to everyone who keeps stepping into Christmas, year after year!" the 78-year-old added. Step into Christmas peaked at No. 9 in the U.K. singles chart this year, and was beaten by festive tracks such as Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You, Wham!'s Last Christmas and Kylie Minogue's new entry, XMAS. Last year, Elton dropped a new video for Step into Christmas. In the reimagining, Cara Delevingne takes on the Rocket Man hitmaker's role, donning oversized glasses and a waistcoat. "When someone suggested the idea of her playing me in a riff on the 1973 Step into Christmas video, I just thought it was the perfect opportunity. Thank God Cara thought the same, because it came out great," he told The Guardian of the project at the time.
