Keys makes a joke about Michael

Alicia Keys couldn't resist joking about George Michael's no-show at her charity ball.

The British star was due to perform alongside the Grammy-winning singer at her Keep A Child Alive Black Ball, but had to drop out after being struck down with a tooth infection.

"I'm very disappointed. George Michael bailed on us. I think he said he had trouble parking or something," Alicia joked on stage, before launching into Freedom.

She was joined by Paloma Faith, Gossip's Beth Ditto and Boy George for the grand finale.

Earlier, Paloma - wearing a snakeskin-print dress with flamboyant feather headpiece and red heels - sang Stone Cold Sober and Upside Down, backed by Mark Ronson and his band The Business International.

The View frontman Kyle Falconer, Beth and Boy George also performed, before Alicia took to the stage to join Tinie Tempah on his No 1 hit, Written In The Stars. She then belted out her songs, Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart and Empire State Of Mind.

"The best thing about tonight is that we can feel good, and have fun together. I'm very proud of us," she said.

Alicia earlier revealed how motherhood had given her philanthropic work extra significance. "It is a big deal, because I think about all the children who don't have a mum," she said on the red carpet.

Over £177,000 was raised in an auction, in aid of Keep A Child Alive which Alicia founded to help African and Indian children affected by HIV/Aids.

A portrait of the young Michael Jackson by Los Angeles pop artist Thierry Guetta, fetched £26,000. Pass Out rapper Tempah bid up to £24,000, but was outbid. A day-long studio session with Ronson went for £20,000.
