'Quirkiest' music festival to begin

Festivities are to get under way for the last and quirkiest event on the summer music festival calendar.

A total of 50,000 music fans will head across to the Isle of Wight for the event featuring acts such as Mercury Music Prize-winner PJ Harvey, Bjork, The Cure, Primal Scream, Pendulum and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.

The festival, held at Robin Hill Country Park, near Newport, has become famous for its fancy dress parade which this year is taking Rock Stars, Pop Stars and Divas as its theme.

The event has grown in size and popularity since it was launched by Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank in 2004.

And prior to the party starting, 11 keen festival-goers swam across the Solent yesterday to reach the island to raise money for charity.

Hampshire Police have issued a warning that the sale of "legal highs" at the festival is banned and they will be adopting a "zero-tolerance" approach.

Illegal drug-dealers will also be targeted and a police spokesman highlighted the case of a 22-year-old university student who was jailed for three years after being caught with £2,000 worth of drugs at last year's event.

Drivers will also be offered breath tests so they can check they are safe to drive home from the event.
