Good vibrations for Bestival crowd

A total of 50,000 music lovers have crossed over to the Isle of Wight to enjoy the last and quirkiest of the summer music festivals.

The main attractions at Bestival, run by Radio 1 DJ Rob Da Bank, include Mercury Music Prize-winner PJ Harvey, Bjork, The Cure, Primal Scream, Pendulum.

One of the first acts was Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys who was greeted with sunshine as he played crowd-pleasers such as Good Vibrations and Surfin' USA.

Ali Coote, 31, of Southsea, Hampshire, said: "Brian really pulled it out of the bag. He may be old but he's still rocking in the free world."

Taking to the stage afterwards was Public Enemy.

Speaking to the crowd, Chuck D, of Public Enemy, - famous for their song Fight the Power - said of last month's riots: "Everyone needs equal rights, everyone needs human rights."

KO Desai, 35, said: "It was great to see a hip hop act at a mainstream festival."

The festival, held at Robin Hill Country Park, near Newport, has become famous for its fancy dress parade which this year is taking "Rock Stars, Pop Stars and Divas" as its theme.
