New Order set for Ibiza return

Manchester legends New Order are heading to Ibiza to play their first gig on the island more than 20 years after they adopted its Balearic sound for one of their most successful records.

They will join acts including Kasabian, Tinie Tempah and Ed Sheeran at the Ibiza Rocks festival later this year.

The band, whose 1983 hit Blue Monday remains the biggest-selling 12-inch single of all time, recorded part of their 1989 number-one album Technique in Ibiza where they were heavily influenced by Balearic house music and acid house.

Singer Bernard Sumner said: "The last time New Order were in Ibiza was the second summer of love. We were there to record an album and didn't really know what we were walking into.

"By the time we left a few months later New Order, the Happy Mondays and the Hacienda had collided and fused with the Balearics and Ibiza's superclubs. Manchester had become Madchester and dance music had made a quantum leap.

"Although we didn't spend much time in the studio, we left with the basis of our album Technique.

"New Order and Ibiza are forever entwined. There's no going back so instead we look forward - to playing our first-ever concert on the island at Ibiza Rocks."

The band formed in 1980 from the ashes of post-punk rockers Joy Division after the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis and became one of British music's most influential acts.
