Maynard: Stop Bieber comparisons

Conor Maynard has insisted that he is different from Justin Bieber.

The 19-year-old from Brighton, who looks likely to top the UK albums charts with his debut record Contrast, said his age, background and influences vary from the Canadian pop star.

"I'm older than him, I'm from the UK, it's a different sound," he said before an acoustic session at the HMV store in Churchill Square shopping centre in Brighton.

"Some of the people I have worked with and my influences are a lot different than the sound that he's going for, and I think when people hear the album, they will definitely hear the differences there."

Conor, whose debut single Can't Say No reached number two in the charts, said being compared to Justin can sometimes work against him.

"I think being put into that is kind of difficult, because obviously I want people to get the album, listen to the music and have their own opinion rather than being told what it is. Sometimes it's hard for new artists when they're straight away being put into a lane they are not particularly in," he explained.

And he joked that he's still getting used to the fame and adulation.

"There are often things thrown on stage, sometimes underwear, which gets a bit weird. There are always different things that end up on the stage - posters and all that kind of thing," he admitted.
